A weekend sponsored walk along Hadrian’s Wall by a Warkworth home tutor has helped a Motor Neurone Disease Association fund-raising campaign reach over £6000.
Stephanie Wilkinson along with sons Ben and Matthew took part in the 25-mile trek in memory of her husband Roger, a former Northumberland County Council architect who died from the disease in January this year.
Proceeds from their walk together with those from a recent coffee morning in the village have topped £3,300. That total adds to the cash donated at Roger’s funeral service and money given by Warkworth Drama Group for whom he had been a volunteer for many years.
Said Stephanie: “Roger loved walking and we felt that the trek along Hadrian’s Wall was just the right thing to do; it was a celebration of his life.”
The walk began on Saturday 11th September at Lanercost Priory and concluded the following day at Brocolitia Roman Fort. Nearly 40 men and women representing half a dozen charities took part.
“I’m thrilled that I managed to complete the event, even though I picked up a few blisters,” said Stephanie. “I’d like to thank those who sponsored us, the people who gave us great support and the individuals who helped me train for what has been the longest walk I have ever done.”
Stephanie has decided to hang up the walking boots for the time being but will not stop her fund raising efforts: the next project is a musical evening in Warkworth, probably later this year.
