With thanks to John Thompson and his team of reporters
WE START this week with the latest from Chatton Lakes.
Trevor Wadds from Craster caught 11 fish using a yellow blob.
Tommy Potts from Ashington kept 3 fish and released 5 fish using a black bunny leech.
Stan Scott from Morebattle caught 7 fish using black buzzers.
Jim Tuck from Ashington had a good session catching 12 fish using a Chatton chaser.
Congratulations to Kevin Andrews from Ayr on winning the Winter League Competition last Saturday.
2nd place went to Tracey Davison from Gateshead and 3rd place went to Alec Bowler from Ayr who won £100.
Ross Lake is fully booked tomorrow but Chatton Lake will be open as normal.
NEXT down to South Linden
The Fishery has been closed for most of the past week due to ice on the lakes, and the Lakes were in flood for a couple days after the recent heavy rain.
However the Fishery is now open again, the water quality is improving but it may still be a good idea to phone ahead and check the water conditions should the temperature drop or that we get more snow.
You can check their website for updated information www.southlindenfishery.org
NOW across to Caistron,
Cliff informs us the lake will be having it’s grand opening today.
Athough the opening was postponed due to ice Cliff wants to remind you that prizes are going to be given for the first fish out of the lake and also for the heaviest fish and heaviest bag and this is for the two days of the week end opening.
HIGHAM Lakes see the long awaited opening of the bottom specimen lake, a massive stocking has went in with the minimum weight being 5lb and Drew tells us there will be a BBQ laid on for all who fish this weekend.
The two top lakes are fishing exceptionally well, with the colder weather the fish are tending to be deep, but when the sun warms up the can be seen rising along the margins.
WE GO now down to Aldin Grange,
Mick has informed us that the lakes are fishing well and the fishing reports coming in form the anglers each day are all positive, with catch returns being into double figures in some cases, lures and blood worms are doing well as are the tinnies and buzzers.
LOCKWOOD Beck is a first for our report but worth a mention as this weekend it has it’s grand opening.
As always it will be a very popular venue as it is noted for it’s massive first stocking, good luck to all those fortunate enough to be fishing it tomorrow.
NEXT across country to Langley Dam
This old Victorian reservoir had it’s opening last weekend, and judging by the reports that we received it fished it’s socks off, with most anglers catching between 5 and 10 fish.
One angler had 14 to the net and dropped another 7, certainly worth a day trip, if only to see where Catherine Cookson used to live.
NOW TO Knitsley Mill,
Again ice has been a problem, Ray is at present on an ice breaking mission, and sats anyone planning a trip can phone him on 07742 092741 before setting off.
CAUSEY Lakes are fishing as they always do with fish being caught on all patterns, bloodworms, buzzers and small black lures catching well.
Joe informs us the new top lake has now been stocked ready for the grand opening on the 14th , with large double figure fish going in, he has also include tagged fish in both lakes, which should make fishing very interesting.
THE SEA Fishing report is of course saddened by the death of Barry Tweddle from Seaton Sluice who was taken by the sea whilst fishing with his local club.
Barry was a well known sea angler, and will be sorely missed in the fishing community, our thoughts are with his family at this time.
ALNWICK Sea Anglers fished their last match of the winter league last Sunday and with a northerly swell there was chance of some fish.
Anthony Gibbison won the match with a single cod of 1lb 15oz which was also the heaviest fish.
The only other angler who managed to catch was Patrick Porteous with a cod of 1lb 5oz.
Anthony Gibbison, who has had a very successful season, is the winter league champion, setting a new club record of 90 fish for a total of 173lb 15oz.
This beat the previous record set seven year ago by Ian Hall who had 68 fish for 168lb 15oz.
Runner-up this year was Andrew Stanton with 50 fish for 121lb ½oz and third was Scott Howie who caught 13 fish for 47lb 14½oz which included the heaviest fish a conger eel of 20lb 5oz which was also a new club record.
A presentation evening will be held at the Oaks Hotel, Alnwick, in two weeks time on Saturday, March 20, from 7pm.
AMBLE Sea Angling Club’s last match of the winter league was won by Ian Harrogate with one cod and two flats weighing in at 4lb 2¾oz.
Martin Raine was runner up with one cod of 2lb 3¾oz but it was the heaviest fish of the day.
So it’s congratulations to Ian Harrogate, winter league winner for the umpteenth time.
That’s it for this week, www.madabouttrout.com gives day to day updates on most local trout fisheries.
